What is a souvenir? Just a tourists wannahave or – as the original French meaning has is – a memory, a keepsake or a memento? Artists Monica Tormell, Orpheu de Jong, Tarja Szaraniec and Tomas Adolfs were wondering this concerning their residency in the first quarter of 2011 at Ateliers ’89: What do we take to Aruba? What do we leave behind? What do we take back?

April 7 & 8, their residency at Ateliers ’89 will be concluded with a SOUVENIR FESTIVAL. Local and international artists, students, designers, musicians, performers, researchers, writers and cooks are invited to take part or to contribute a work round the subject souvenir.

It is hard to miss the grip tourism has on Aruba. All-inclusive beach resorts, luxury high-rise hotels, casino’s and shopping malls are dispersed all along the white coast. On one hand tourism brings an abundance of economic prosperity. On the other hand this touristic amusement sometimes seems to overshadow cultural and historic frames of reference. The souvenirs are symbolic, objects of mimicked memories of a short sunny holiday. 

The SOUVENIR FESTIVAL evolves around the souvenir in the broadest sense of the word and touches matters as authenticity, fiction and constructed reality. For instance think of: mass produced tokens in light of authentic memory, diluted histories, forgotten places, the attraction of the tropics, the esthetic of souvenirs and souvenir shops and the accompanying image representation, a search for recognition, a postcard come to true.

Op 7 & 8 april, vind bij Ateliers ’89 op Aruba het SOUVENIR FESTIVAL plaats. Lokale en internationale kunstenaars, studenten, ontwerpers, muzikanten, performers, onderzoekers, schrijvers en koks, worden uitgenodigd deel te nemen of een bijdrage te leveren rond het thema souvenir.

Het festival wordt samengesteld door de kunstenaars Monica Tormell, Orpheu de Jong, Tarja Szaraniec en Tomas Adolfs. Tijdens hun residency bij Ateliers ’89 vragen ze zich af: Wat nemen we mee naar Aruba? Wat laten we achter? Wat nemen we mee terug?

De invloed van het toerisme op Aruba is niet te missen. All-inclusive beach resorts, luxe high-rise hotels, casino’s en de shoppingmalls zijn als ideale hotspots langs de witte kust verspreid. Het toerisme brengt enerzijds flinke economische welvaart met zich mee.  Anderzijds lijkt toeristisch vertier in sommige gevallen culturele en historische referentie kaders te overschaduwen. Symbolisch zijn de souvenirs, objecten als imitatie herinneringen aan een kortstondig zonnig vakantieverblijf.

De meest voor de hand liggende associatie bij het begrip souvenir is die van het toeristische hebbeding. Maar de oorspronkelijk Franse betekenis van souvenir, als herinnering, aandenken of gedenkschrift, is veel breder.

Het SOUVENIR FESTIVAL ontwikkelt zich rond het souvenir in de breedste zin van het woord en raakt aan zaken als authenticiteit, fictie en geconstrueerde werkelijkheid. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan: massa geproduceerde aandenkens ten opzichte van authentieke herinneringen, verwaterde geschiedenis, vergeten plekken, de aantrekkingkracht van het tropisch eiland, de esthetiek van souvenirs en souvenirshops en de bijbehorende selectieve beeldvorming, een zoektocht naar herkenning, een waar geworden postkaart.
